Batemans Bay Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine

Acupuncture is grounded in tradition and informed by modern anatomy

Ancient foundations, evolving understanding

Classical texts associated with the Huangdi Neijing, including the Ling Shu, helped shape the early theory and practice of acupuncture. These works developed over centuries and remain important to traditional Chinese medicine education.

Modern research continues to investigate how acupuncture stimulation may interact with nerves, connective tissue, pain processing and other physiological systems. The mechanisms are not fully settled, and it is more accurate to say that modern science is exploring these relationships than to claim that every traditional acupuncture point corresponds to a single nerve or ganglion.

For Anthony, this continuing dialogue between classical knowledge and modern anatomy is one reason to keep studying. It allows traditional concepts to be approached with curiosity, care and clinical responsibility.

Could acupuncture be suitable for you?

People commonly enquire about acupuncture as complementary support for concerns such as:

• Back, neck, shoulder and other musculoskeletal pain.

• Headaches and migraine.

• Sleep difficulty and stress-related tension.

• Menstrual cramps and selected women's health concerns.

• Nerve-related discomfort, altered sensation or movement and function goals that are already being medically assessed.

Suitability and response vary from person to person. Anthony will take a health history, discuss any existing diagnosis or care, and explain whether acupuncture may have a reasonable role. You should not delay medical assessment for new, severe or worsening symptoms.

What to expect at your first appointment

1. A detailed conversation - your main concern, medical history, current treatment, medicines, sleep, movement, digestion and other relevant factors.

2. An individual assessment - this may include traditional Chinese medicine observations and appropriate functional or physical checks.

3. A clear explanation - Anthony will discuss the proposed approach, answer questions and obtain consent before treatment.

4. Your treatment - fine, sterile, single-use acupuncture needles are placed at selected points and may be retained for a period of time.

5. A practical plan - frequency and review points depend on your goals, how long the concern has been present and how you respond.

You do not need a referral to enquire about acupuncture. It is helpful to bring a list of medicines and relevant reports. Tell Anthony if you are pregnant, take blood-thinning medicine, have a bleeding condition, reduced immunity, a pacemaker or any other significant health concern.

Chinese herbal medicine

Where appropriate and within his registered scope, Anthony may also discuss Chinese herbal medicine. Any recommendation is made after consultation and with consideration of your current medicines, health history and other care.

Herbal medicine is not automatically included in an acupuncture plan. Please tell Anthony about all prescription medicines, over-the-counter products and supplements you take so potential interactions and precautions can be considered.
